Publication & Editorial Design

Turning long-form text and visual content into a readable publication through rhythm, typography and consistent page systems.

Many pages. A clear flow.

HOW DOES THIS WORK DEVELOP?

Each page in a publication works as part of a whole. I design text, headings, photographs and supporting information within a shared system. For books, catalogues and corporate publications, we plan the content structure, reading order and print or screen requirements together.

01

A page system suited to the content

Dense text and image-led catalogues need different layouts. I define columns, margins and visual areas from content samples. The system should accommodate different sections while keeping a recognisable structure throughout the publication.

02

Typography and reading rhythm

Body text, section titles, captions and footnotes each have a role. Typeface, size, leading and heading levels make these differences clear. I consider how text and images flow across page turns, so the internal pages receive the same attention as the cover.

THE IDEA TAKES SHAPE

A clear flow.

  3. 03Page flow
  4. 04PDF / print

From the first brief to the final delivery, every step follows the same visual direction.

03

Typesetting and content changes

Changes to approved text can affect pagination and flow. We establish file versions and a correction method early to keep revisions manageable. Design and typesetting are distinguished from writing, editing and final content approval.

04

Different outputs for print and screen

Printed publications need dimensions, binding and technical settings suited to the producer. Screen PDFs involve additional decisions around file size, image quality and navigation. If both are required, we agree on their separate output requirements beforehand.

Deliverables

Deliverables and file requirements are agreed individually for each brief.

  • Internal page design for books and multi-page publications
  • Catalogue and corporate publication layouts
  • Typographic hierarchy and shared page templates
  • Typesetting approved text and placing imagery
  • Cover design where included in the brief
  • Print PDF prepared to producer specifications
  • Agreed screen-reading PDF version
  • Editable publication files within scope

Working process

  1. 01

    Review the content structure

We review text, sections, imagery and publication format, then agree on design, typesetting and delivery needs.

  2. 02

    Design sample pages

I prepare examples for the different content types so we can evaluate the type and layout system.

  3. 03

    Develop the publication

I apply the approved system throughout, adjusting text flow and imagery alongside the supplied corrections.

  4. 04

    Prepare final review and output

After content approval, I check typesetting and layout and prepare the selected print and screen versions.

LET’S DEFINE THE NEED

For our first conversation

A few sentences in response to these questions are a useful starting point for understanding your needs and defining the scope.

  1. Is this a book, catalogue or another multi-page publication?
  2. Are the text and section order approved, and who handles final proofreading?
  3. Are images, captions and any footnotes ready?
  4. Do you need print, screen use or both?

Frequently asked questions

Can design begin before all text is ready?

The page system can be developed from content samples. Full typesetting needs the text and section structure to be sufficiently established. We discuss how later changes may affect pagination.

Does the scope include copy editing?

This service focuses on design, page layout and typesetting. Writing, copy editing and final content accuracy need separately agreed responsibilities. Text versions and proofreading stages are established at the start.

Can the same publication have print and digital PDFs?

Both can be included. Print files follow producer specifications and screen versions reflect reading and file-size needs. Navigation features such as linked contents can be specified in the brief.
