Print & Outdoor Design

Visual communication designed for its physical setting, from printed material read up close to billboards seen from a distance.

HOW DOES THIS WORK DEVELOP?

A street poster and a brochure offer different viewing times and distances. I develop the design around its physical dimensions, viewing conditions and content. Creative composition and production requirements are planned together to prepare files for the intended application.

01

Distance and time change the design

Outdoor communication needs a main message that can be recognised quickly. I consider the scale of the headline, product and brand mark around the viewing conditions. Printed material read up close can carry more detail and a different information sequence.

02

Organise printed information

In brochures, leaflets and other print, the reading order matters as much as the imagery. Folds, transitions between sides and the order of headings inform the layout. When content grows, we discuss the format or number of pages rather than forcing it into a crowded space.

THE IDEA TAKES SHAPE

  1. 01Distance
  2. 02Scale
  3. 03Technical check
  4. 04Production

From the first brief to the final delivery, every step follows the same visual direction.

03

Confirm specifications before production

Bleed, safe areas, colour settings and resolution depend on the producer’s requirements. Similar applications may use different dimensions with different suppliers. I obtain the final technical details and check the design against them before export.

04

A campaign across physical formats

A campaign may appear on posters, billboards and smaller print pieces. The core idea remains connected while each surface gets its own scale, crop and reading structure. Presentation mockups help evaluate direction; production files follow the actual dimensions and specifications.

Deliverables

Deliverables and file requirements are agreed individually for each brief.

  • Poster designs
  • Billboard and outdoor compositions
  • Leaflet and brochure layouts
  • Campaign adaptations for selected print formats
  • Presentation visuals for evaluating the direction
  • Print PDFs prepared to the producer’s specifications
  • Editable files agreed in the brief

Working process

  1. 01

    Gather application requirements

We review the location, dimensions, content and producer’s specifications, listing print and outdoor formats separately.

  2. 02

    Design the reading order

I establish the message hierarchy for the viewing distance and develop the appropriate compositions.

  3. 03

    Adapt to the surfaces

I apply the approved direction to the selected surfaces, considering folds, framing and format-specific needs.

  4. 04

    Check production files

I review bleed, safe areas, colour and resolution against the technical specifications and prepare the print files.

LET’S DEFINE THE NEED

For our first conversation

A few sentences in response to these questions are a useful starting point for understanding your needs and defining the scope.

  1. Where and from what distance will the material be seen?
  2. Are the dimensions, fold plan and producer’s specifications confirmed?
  3. How many different surfaces will carry this campaign?
  4. Which team will approve the copy, imagery and final print files?

Frequently asked questions

Does this service include printing?

The scope here is design and preparation of production files. Printing, purchasing, materials and installation responsibilities are defined separately. I can work with your supplier’s technical specifications.

Can a social post become a billboard?

The idea can carry across, but enlarging the file may not be enough. Text density, image resolution and viewing distance require a composition review. We assess the source files to define the adaptation.

What is needed for a print-ready file?

Final dimensions, cutting or folding templates, file requirements, approved copy and suitable images are needed. The files are checked against the producer’s specifications.
