Web Design

Bringing brand identity, content and visitor needs together in a clear web experience across screen sizes.

A considered screen. A clear path.

HOW DOES THIS WORK DEVELOP?

A website extends beyond its first screen. I consider what the visitor is looking for, what the brand wants to communicate and how the content will grow. For a corporate site, portfolio or campaign, I establish the page structure before developing the visual identity into a usable interface.

01

Content and journey together

Learning about a brand, exploring a service and making contact create different content needs. We organise the pages and the paths between them around those needs. I review the available copy, images and project material to define navigation, headings and page sections.

02

Bring the identity to the screen

Colour, typography, spacing and imagery reflect the brand’s character. Headings, buttons and the order of content should work together. Testing the visual direction with real content helps assess how it will behave in everyday use.

THE IDEA TAKES SHAPE

A considered screen.
A clear path.

  1. 01Purpose
  2. 02Page structure
  3. 03Interface
  4. 04Screens

From the first brief to the final delivery, every step follows the same visual direction.

03

Different screens, a shared purpose

A desktop layout needs more than shrinking for a phone. I consider content order, navigation, image ratios and touch areas separately. If an interactive prototype is needed, we can include the main journeys and component states to make the page flow visible.

04

From design to implementation

Design delivery, development, content management and publishing can have different scopes. For developer handover, I organise layouts, component states and usage notes. Coding, domain, hosting, email and maintenance requirements are discussed separately so the proposal is clear.

Deliverables

Deliverables and file requirements are agreed individually for each brief.

  • Sitemap and content hierarchy
  • Homepage and selected internal page designs
  • Mobile and desktop interface layouts
  • Visual rules for recurring components
  • Prototype of the agreed navigation journeys
  • Design and interaction notes for developers
  • Visual assets and design files included in scope

Working process

  1. 01

    Define content and purpose

We review audiences, page needs and available content, then establish the design and implementation scope.

  2. 02

    Establish structure and direction

I develop the sitemap and content order and we review the interface using real copy and images.

  3. 03

    Develop pages and interactions

I apply the selected direction to internal and mobile pages, refining navigation and component states.

  4. 04

    Deliver the design

I prepare pages, assets and usage notes in the agreed file structure and review the handover with the implementation team where applicable.

LET’S DEFINE THE NEED

For our first conversation

A few sentences in response to these questions are a useful starting point for understanding your needs and defining the scope.

  1. Who are the main visitors, and what should they be able to do easily?
  2. How many pages, services or projects are needed, and is the content ready?
  3. Do you have brand guidelines, a domain and technical infrastructure?
  4. Do you need design alone, a prototype or implementation support too?

Frequently asked questions

Does web design include publishing the site?

Design, development and publishing are separate stages. This page describes the design process. Development, hosting, domain, content management and maintenance require their own agreed tasks and deliverables.

Can we begin before all content is ready?

We can develop the structure and direction using existing content samples. Final layouts need real copy and images. Discussing future content types early helps create a layout that can grow.

Can mobile layouts be included?

Yes. We define the screen layouts and component states in the brief. Content order, navigation and image ratios are considered specifically for mobile use.
