DESIGN / COLLABORATION4 min read

What to say instead of “make it more striking”.

“More premium”, “a little more dynamic” and “more corporate” describe a feeling without identifying the decision to change. Good collaboration connects that feeling with a purpose, an audience and a specific visual choice.

THREE POINTS TO KEEP

  1. State the purpose and constraints in the brief.
  2. Connect feedback to an element and a reason.
  3. Collect revisions in one approval flow.

01

Write a short brief that supports decisions

A brief does not need to be a long presentation. Clarify who the work is for, what it should communicate, where it will appear and which files are needed. Include required brand elements, available copy and imagery alongside the budget and schedule.

Make unanswered questions visible. If the central message or image source is unresolved, record it at the start. Designing with known gaps is more manageable than rebuilding everything at the end.

02

Describe the decision you like in a reference

Identify what makes an example useful: color relationships, type weight, spacing, photography or motion rhythm. Picking two or three specific qualities instead of asking for the whole example helps new work retain its own identity.

For video, a storyboard can make the same conversation concrete. Adobe’s Firefly Boards guide demonstrates developing a scene sequence from a starting image and a style reference. It offers a way to explore and preview a direction; assessing the result remains a design decision.

03

Connect observation, purpose and suggestion

Instead of “make it more striking”, try: “The main message is receding at first glance; we want the product noticed sooner; could we rebalance the headline and product?” This explains the problem and desired effect while leaving room for the designer to solve it.

Resolve contradictory feedback before applying it. If one team asks for larger type and another asks for more whitespace, agree on the priority first. Applying both comments without that discussion may weaken the composition.

A practical comparison
Vague commentClearer review
More corporateStrengthen how the type and color system relates to the existing identity.
It feels emptyWhich information is missing, and how important should it be?
More dynamicWhich message or element should the motion guide attention toward?
04

Close each revision round visibly

Collect feedback in one list rather than leaving it across message channels. Associate each item with a page, frame or timecode. That replaces “the last image I sent” with a version everyone can identify.

After revisions, note which items were applied and which need another decision. Recording the delivery list alongside the approved version gives future adaptations a reliable starting point.

Working checklist

  • Purpose and audience
  • Channels and ratios
  • Required brand elements
  • One revision list
  • Clear approval owner
  • Delivery files and version

A clear brief and useful feedback leave more time to improve the quality of the design itself.
